Temperature can be taken orally, rectally, axillary or via tympanic membrane. Pulse is assessed by palpation or auscultation. Respiratory
As the ear canal and tympanic membrane have no inherent metabolic activity, then the temperature of the tympanic membrane should be primarily determined by this

tympanic membrane. Incorrect technique of taking tympanic temperature. Healthcare practitioner incorrectly placing the tympanic thermometer directly into ear
Tympanic Temperature The normal tympanic temperature is usually 0.3 0.6 C higher than an oral temperature (OER 1). It is accurate because the tympanic membrane shares the same vascular artery that perfuses the hypothalamus (OER 1). A tympanic thermometer is shown in Figure 2.4.
The first devices used to measure tympanic membrane (TM) temperature did so by being in direct contact with the tympanic membrane. In 2024, it was shown that such a device measured core temperature better than a rectal thermometer . However, thermistors in direct contact with the TM are not practical for everyday use.
The tympanic probe is designed to seal the ear canal and safely allow the ear canal to equilibrate to tympanic membrane temperature.
